Before the actual construction work on the locks can begin, suitable construction site access roads with sufficient load-bearing capacity must first be created. Due to the sometimes very remote location of the locks, this is more or less time-consuming work.
The Ruhlsdorf lock is conveniently located for the construction project on the L31 state road, so that only the existing access road needs to be adapted.
In Leesenbrück and Grafenbrück, however, completely new access roads must be built. At the Leesenbrück lock, the access road leads from the south over an agricultural area. At the Grafenbrück lock, a temporary forest path must be built to protect the village of Marienwerder, which connects the lock in a northerly direction with the B167 federal road.
In addition, the outer harbor immediately in front of and behind the lock must be filled at each location in order to be able to reach both sides of the chamber with the construction equipment.
