The
Oderbruch offers
unique birdwatching opportunities, especially along the
edge of the slope between Altglietzen and Gabow. The region is bordered to the north by the Neuhagen Oder Island, and from the south-east of this glacial ridge there is an impressive view of the vast plains of the Bruch.
Start / Finish: Altglietzen
Length / Duration: 4.5 kilometres, 2 hours
Nature of the trail: Natural paths and dry grassland
Course: Altglietzen, Gabow, ridge, Altglietzen
Route description The tour starts in
Altglietzen and leads
along the edge of the slope towards
Gabow. Especially during the
breeding season, numerous bird species that favour dry habitats can be discovered.
Tree pipits perform their characteristic song flights, during which they ascend singing and then gently glide to the ground with their wings spread out. The melodious
woodlark can also be heard regularly and, with a bit of luck, a
hoopoe can be seen foraging. The trail finally leads up to the 50 metre high ridge before returning to Altglietzen. In winter, there are excellent opportunities to observe
swans and
geese resting on the lower-lying grassland along the edge.
Additional tips:
- Best time: Spring and summer for songbirds, winter for waterfowl.
- Equipment: Binoculars for the best view of geese and swans on the plain.
- Refreshment stops: The Fuchsbau restaurant in Neuglietzen offers a cosy place to stop for refreshments after the tour.
This varied hike combines marvellous landscapes with fascinating birdwatching and is a must for nature lovers!
