The ironworks to the west of Lichterfelder Strasse were originally built between 1847 and 1849 by the Borsig plant in the Berlin borough of Moabit as a prototype for an unsupported construction that could easily be expanded if needed. A monument of great significance in the history of architecture has been preserved opposite the Familiengarten in Eberswalde: the so-called Borsighalle, which once belonged to the grounds of the Eisenspalterei ironworks that stretched across both sides of Lichterfelder Strasse. A model for a great many station concourses, factory halls and exhibition areas, it was demolished in 1900 and moved to its present location on the Finowkanal.
