Enchanted and idyllic, the Finow River slowly meanders for almost 30 km through the riverbed of the valley of the same name. Since the start of the industrial age, the river has been regulated here by 13 locks. The smoke and industrial noise of the 18th century and constant loading and unloading of the barges making their journey to and from Berlin have largely given way to nature’s silence. The tour starts in an easterly direction and after only a few minutes a stunning view of the Lower Oder Valley opens up in front of you. You will love the meadows and forests and the untouched river landscape. Towards the west, you can learn all about river control performed by the historical hand-operated locks – each one staffed by friendly and helpful lock keepers. Don’t be afraid of the locks! Once you have passed two, it will be fun. On this tour, on the right bank, the Werbellin Canal branches off to the north. After a short time, you will also pass through enchanted sections of the river until, after what feels like an eternity, the light breaks through the trees and reveals the crystal clear turquoise water of Lake Werbellinsee.
