The tradition of winter sports in Bad Freienwalde dates back to the year 1923. The town owes its ski-jump facilities and its tradition of Winter Sports Days to the winter sports club founded in that year. But from the end of the 1950s this tradition fell dormant and virtually fell into oblivion. The club was re-founded in 2001 and the ski jumps were reconstructed – which was sneered at by many at first. After a 10-metre, a 20-metre and a 40-metre ski jump, a facility was built in 2008 that allows jumps of up to 70 metres. The latter is 32 metres high; 161 steps have to be climbed to enjoy a breathtaking view of the Sparkasse Ski Arena and the surrounding area of Bad Freienwald with its expanse woodlands and hills. The Schanzenturm forms part of the so-called “Bad Freienwald Turmdiplom” – a special certificate issued for completing a hiking trail and ascending certain climbing towers.
