Paddling for the first time

Tips for beginners

The first uncertainties sometimes arise when choosing a boat. In a nutshell, it can be said that canoes (or, more correctly, Canadian canoes) are better suited to beginners. Although they are less maneuverable, they are also more stable on the water and offer plenty of space for luggage. In a canoe, you use a paddle to paddle to one side and sit in a more open boat, like a rowing boat.

Take it easy. Don’t take on too much for your first paddle tour. Paddling is strenuous, whether with or against the current. It also takes some time to paddle in sync with your fellow paddlers. We recommend a tour of a maximum of 4 kilometers. With children, the first tour should only take about 2 hours. If this works well, the next tour can be longer.

Bear in mind that you should allow at least 20 minutes for a lock. If there is a lot of traffic, the waiting time may be longer.

The rental stations in the region will provide you with the necessary equipment such as a boat, paddle and life jacket. Be sure to pack provisions, sufficient water and, above all, sun protection. Be aware that there are only a few shady passages on the Finowkanal and that you will spend a lot of time in the sun if the weather is right.

Paddling with children

The Finowkanal is a calm body of water and therefore ideal for paddling tours with children. To ensure that the family trip remains safe and enjoyable, please note the following recommendations:

  • Lifejackets compulsory: All persons on board must wear a suitable lifejacket. You can obtain these from the boat rental company.
  • Minimum age: We recommend an age of 4-6 years, depending on the child’s level of development and sitting stability.
  • Route length: Short stages of 3-4 km, i.e. around 2 hours, are suitable for small children. Children need frequent breaks to move, play and eat. You should therefore plan a stop for a shore leave.
  • Safety: Despite calm conditions, capsizing is possible. Plan for at least one adult rescuer per child. Babies and small children must not be carried in stretchers or baby carriers.
  • Stable seating position: Children should be able to sit securely and stay in place for a while. Smaller children should sit low and in the middle of the boat – this increases stability.
  • Boat selection: Stable, low-tip boats – such as canoes – are particularly suitable for families.
  • Weather & protection: Make sure you wear sun protection, weather-appropriate clothing and have enough to drink. Children cool down faster
