Tips for your safety

The Finowkanal, the HOW and the Werbellin waters from km2.73 are federal waterways. Behavior in boat traffic is regulated by corresponding laws.

The following regulations are important for water hikers:

  • All small vessels (pleasure craft) must avoid passenger ships and other large vessels. Motorized pleasure craft must give way to non-motorized pleasure craft if the water depth permits.
  • The legal blood alcohol limit also applies on the water.
  • It is strictly forbidden to drive over weirs.
  • There are locks between Ruhlsdorf and Liepe as well as in Eichhorst and Rosenbeck. The locks on the Finowkanal are operated by staff. Information on operating times can be found at: Locks
  • The locks in Rosenbeck and Eichhorst on the Werbellin Canal are fully automated. Traffic is regulated by display boards and signal systems.
  • Scheduled passenger vessels, WSA working vessels and other large vessels have priority over pleasure craft at the locks.
  • Canoes can be sluiced at the locks. Stand up paddleboards are prohibited.
